Extraordinary 63-Acre Waterfront Estate
An expansive and secluded setting with enviable water views in all directions
Yesterday a broker open house was held for licensed real estate agents/brokers from around the Connecticut/New York area. A great turn out from curious agents wanting to experience the rare opportunity of touring this private island after hearing about it on the news that has been advertised worldwide. Our firm along with Christie’s International Real Estate has the privilege of representing this one of a kind real estate on the east coast of New England. Driving thru Darien seemed so charming and hard to imagine that just under an hour away is the bright lights and most visited city in the world, New York City.
Impressive gates bracket the half-mile driveway leading through open lawns with an allee of trees bordered by meadows and board fences.
Driving along the serene entrance, the first stop for horse lovers was the substantial 20-stall granite horse stable with an indoor ring. The tile inside the stable was the same Guastavino tile used in Grand Central’s Oyster Bar, New York City. The stable was busy with caretakers riding and making sure the stables are maintained to the highest standards.
Next stop was seeing the original romantic Italian stone manor house that was acquired in 1902 as a compound for a well-known family that still owns it. The original stone house with a tile roof offers superb water views in all directions. Amazing that as you are walking on the grounds you get such a peaceful feeling, as all stress is released walking along the waterfront – yet, the property is close to town and one mile from the main-line railroad station. It was a cloudy day, however, did get sunny for a brief period, but it did not take away the amazing architecture this estate has to offer.
One of the favorite views besides the water was the unique sculptures and statues located amongst the property – Juliet was easily viewed as you arrived to the main house.
Truly a great escape walking along totally quiet, private lanes or walking in the open lawns, this is “Great Island” – the birdlife, including hummingbirds is peaceful and the majestic trees could never be achieved by any newly built property. There is so much more to Great Island – a beach house, a bathhouse, a polo practice field, two stone cottages, a yacht basin with docks, a lovely guesthouse and a handsome stone garage building, several beaches and a charming 1860s antique house situated in its own corner near the stone stable, which features a clock in the gable, a copper weathervane, and three apartments.
In discussing with those that attended, one of the favorite comments of the day was – “This estate is like a fairy tale and is fit for a Prince and his family.” No other property of this size will offer that unique opportunity to create a family home for generations to come.
